Acting Ombudsperson preoccupied with the problems of the Egyptian community

The complaints from the Egyptian community residing in the neighbourhood “Kolonia” in the Municipality of Gjakovë/Đakovica made the Acting Ombudsperson Mr. Hilmi Jashari visit them today to get closely familiar with their living conditions.
In this neighbourhood live 144 families from the Egyptian community, 21 Albanian families, 2 Roma families, 2 Ashkali families and 1 Serbian family totalling to 720 inhabitants, and they lack the elementary living conditions such as potable water and adequate shelter.
The majority of inhabitants of this neighbourhood who are surviving thanks to the landfill which is situated few meters from the shelter where they reside, also suffer from lack of education, which according to the NGOs in this area results from them discontinuing education to their children.
Acting Ombudsperson Mr. Hilmi Jashari concerned about the current situation of the inhabitants in “Kolonia” neighbourhood as well as about the future of new generations, called on the government authorities of Kosova to take immediate measures in order to secure fundamental human rights to these inhabitants by providing them adequate shelter and possibility for socio-economic development, or else, Mr. Jashari draws the attention that the lack of elementary living conditions, lack of adequate medical treatment as well as lack of hygiene for these inhabitants might result in fatal consequences to this neighbourhood and to the Kosovo society.
Addressing to the central and local government, Mr. Jashari reminded them that International Conventions on Human Rights and Applicable Laws in Kosovo, mainly deal with providing a dignified life to all citizens, and therefore, he called on the government to respect them about which they had already committed themselves to.
